Dyan Neary

Dyan Neary is a writer, journalist, and documentary filmmaker from New York City. Her feature stories and essays have appeared in New York Magazine, Elle, The New York Times, NPR’s “All Things Considered,” GO, In These Times, The Southeast Review, ZMag, The Independent, and elsewhere, with a focus on human rights, public health, and criminal justice issues. She has worked as a staff writer for the Earth Times and Conference News Daily, providing on-site coverage of international United Nations summits. She was the 2017 recipient of the Lillian Smith Writer-in-Service Award and a 2017 winner of the FSU Creative Writing Spotlight Award for Nonfiction. Dyan is a doctoral candidate in Creative Writing at Florida State University, where she also teaches article and essay composition. She has taught creative writing at a women’s correctional facility in Florida since 2013, and is currently working on a book about the rise of the American prison. Last updated July 2017
